The only benefit ...
The only benefit that you may have by being totallt awake is that you may have the ability to make a comment to your surgeon. On the other hand it may affect the sterility of the operation, whether or not you could have submuscular implants and the like. We do it under IV sedation. We sit the patient up before the incision is closed. I would suggest that you view the before and after photos here for the results.

Saline isn't dangerous even if it leaks. They actually use this at hospitals to clean out the IV cord after they inject medicine into it. So if you've ever had medicine through an IV before you've had Saline in you. The hospital injected Saline into my IV three times after I had a C-Section.
